draft: Feeling Bad Today

Every footfall in the city lands on ground that once held someone's great idea. As time grinds forward, thousands of works are lost as they fall from our attention. Communities –especially in modern times– have formed to archive media, but ink-blood still slips through the cracks.

Of course, not everything is lost to simple degradation, or the faceless hands of the censors; sometimes, the destruction is swift and catastrophic. I remember the burning of the warehouse on XXXXX Road, and it's probably the reason why I am in the field I'm in. Shriveled papers littered the streets, and the charred smell lingered in the air long after its dousing.

But, no one seemed to talk about it. I may have been a bit like a hornbill sealed up in a tree then, but you'd think that the destruction of so much would have appeared even on what little of the news I could see. But, it was like people's care vanished with all those old pamphlets.

This post is really just to vent, as thinking about it frustrates me a lot. In fact, I've been having a lot of dreams about it recently. There's not really much of a narrative to them, more like reoccurring scenes.

Usually it starts with seeing some abandoned-looking area, all sepia-colored. A bunch of black… scribbles or tentacles or something start to appear at the edges and corners of everything. Mostly at the bottom, like oil seeping out of the ground.

It all starts to clump together, and I can see bits of images. Things like old films, but all blurry and distorted. Some, I swear I recognized. Eventually, it forms a tower of black blots in the center of wherever it is. It starts to speak, a voice sounding like static and gravel.

“We have been crawling in the depths for too long.”

“You seem to be a kindred soul.”

“We wish to entwine, so that our fellows can both be brought into the light.”

The dream ends around there. If I've responded, I don't remember what I said.

I know that this isn't a dive or anything else interesting. I just wanted to get this off my chest– it's just been really frustrating lately, with all the takedowns and stuff.
